How BONESCOUTURE got started

Introduce your Etsy shop and tell us your story. How did you begin and decide on what to sell on Etsy, and how do you create your products?

My shop is called Bones Couture. I began selling on Etsy after interning for I’m Your Present and taking art classes. I had such a hard time finding affordable attire that was unique and allowed me to express myself. I decided to start creating items for myself before I realised that there must be others out there like me who wanted to dress differently at a reasonable cost.

Favorite items

What are your favorite items? What makes these so special? Why do you think these items might be selling well?

My favourite item in the shop, and by far the best seller, are these neon dangle evil eye earrings. I think they sell so well because they’re so unique and colourful. I also love to give my customers options so they can choose what kind of finish the earring has, like hooks instead of earring posts. I also love and am super proud of my more intricate designs, like the Nesting Doll earrings.

Getting sales on Etsy

How long did it take for you to earn your first sale and how do you currently attract customers to your Etsy shop?

It took a month or so to earn my first sale. I try to attract customers to my shop by being supportive of their individuality and frequently reposting pictures of customers wearing Bones Couture products styled in their own amazing way! Kindness and inclusion are key and very important to me personally.

Managing BONESCOUTURE

How do you manage your shop? Are you running solo or do you have any team members? What tools or services do you use to run your shop and how do you handle fulfillment?

I’m a single mom who runs my shop solo! I use a laser cutter to create all my acrylic designs and screen print in my studio at home. I use Crowdfire to help me manage my social media accounts and cut down on promotion time so that I can focus on making, packing, and shipping orders as well as creating new designs.

The future of BONESCOUTURE

What goals do you have for your shop in the future?

I’d love to add housewares to Bones Couture so customers can not only style themselves the way they feel comfortable, but also bring that vibe into their homes!

Advice for new sellers

What’s your advice for a new seller starting an Etsy shop?

Be patient and kind to yourself. It can obviously be frustrating at times, and sometimes things don't sell or work the way you think they will.

If you love what you do, never give up. I’ve had so many exciting opportunities fall through, but I’m still here doing what I love. I try to remember that everything is a lesson and that it’s better to surrender and evolve than to beat yourself up.
