How MongolianHandicrafts got started
Introduce your Etsy shop and tell us your story. How did you begin and decide on what to sell on Etsy, and how do you create your products?
Being born in the Altai Mountains and growing up in Mongolia, I always loved our authentic handicrafts. We use our wool products almost all year. Grandparents were authentic nomads, so we grew up in the nomadic lifestyle, combing the wool when the right season came. Then we produce our daily wear, handicrafts, carpets, and everything else that we need for living. Combining herding animals is essential. Because it prepares them for warmer seasons. At the same time, their wool can be used in our clothes, handicrafts, and garments. I always appreciate why and how Mother Earth is so mysterious, intelligent, and harmoniously organized by itself. It's just beyond concept. My life journey continues to live abroad, but I always bring my origins everywhere. As they say, "Home is where the heart is. That's how Mongolian handicraft was born. For more than 10 years, I and my husband have worked with many Mongolian handicraftsmen, artists, cooperatives, and nomads. We design with Swiss standard quality, Mongolian nomadic philosophy, and 100% authentic pure wool. We produce very fine-quality wool products and sell them in person and online as well.
Favorite items
What are your favorite items? What makes these so special? Why do you think these items might be selling well?
Yak socks are our best-selling and favorite item. Hand combed by nomads and processed by craftsmen, these socks are ultra soft, warm, undyed organic yak color, hypoallergenic, and breathable. We can find all types and qualities of wool in Mongolia. For these socks, we selected the finest fiber from the youngest yaks. We feel the warmth and etheric energy when wool is pure and organic.
Getting sales on Etsy
How long did it take for you to earn your first sale and how do you currently attract customers to your Etsy shop?
We used to sell in person during festivals and markets. So people know us already. Maybe it helped us sell faster. We started to sell in the first and second weeks. We attract more customers through Etsy ads sometimes, and sometimes only through our sell-on person during our extra activities.
Managing MongolianHandicrafts
How do you manage your shop? Are you running solo or do you have any team members? What tools or services do you use to run your shop and how do you handle fulfillment?
I handle shipping and fulfillment on my own. It takes a lot of time. But I enjoy communicating with people who have similar interests and love our work. All other work, such as production, designing, and more, is done by our team of artisans. After working together for many years, we have become a family. We do our duties and fulfill them with much enthusiasm. Trust and ethical cooperation fit our team.
The Future of MongolianHandicrafts
What goals do you have for your shop in the future?
If we provide quality products, selling the quantity comes later. So we will concentrate more on quality improvement, design, and understanding the customer's needs. At the same time, we will always stick to the value of authentic nomadism. The consciousness of Mother Earth reveals itself in our daily attitudes.
Advice for new sellers
What’s your advice for a new seller starting an Etsy shop?
Define your innermost desire to work in this field. If you are conscious of it now, creativity comes with it. Difficulties are annoying, but it's a road to walk on creatively. It is also better to sell online and offline at the same time.
