How TheJollyFatElf got started

Introduce your Etsy shop and tell us your story. How did you begin and decide on what to sell on Etsy, and how do you create your products?

My shop is The Jolly Fat Elf. I initially opened it in 2010 and sold hand-beaded, custom ornaments. Think sequins and beads. At the same time, I discovered a love of card making, and after deciding to stop making ornaments, my shop became one for selling my cards. I did have a brief stint as a sticker shop when the planning community exploded in 2016. My products are basically cards I make in my YouTube videos. My channel has the same name.

Favorite items

What are your favorite items? What makes these so special? Why do you think these items might be selling well?

I love these cute cards that have images that wobble around. I love sharing easy and inexpensive ways to make cards, and these cards were made using tags I picked up off Amazon. All of the interactive cards are so fun!

Getting sales on Etsy

How long did it take for you to earn your first sale and how do you currently attract customers to your Etsy shop?

Oh man, I honestly can’t remember how long it took. I would say within the first 6 months or so. Back then, Etsy was strictly meant for handmade items. After it went public, the platform seemed to explode with imported items. Now, I use my YouTube channels (I have three), Facebook, and Instagram to let my followers know that I have listed new items, etc.

Managing TheJollyFatElf

How do you manage your shop? Are you running solo or do you have any team members? What tools or services do you use to run your shop and how do you handle fulfillment?

It’s just me, and I only use either the desktop version or the seller app on my phone. I basically have a postal scale and a Dymo label printer. I prepare my cards as I list them. I’m able to package them quickly and can usually ship the same or next day.

The future of TheJollyFatElf

What goals do you have for your shop in the future?

Honestly, at the end of 2022, I said that I would be closing the Etsy shop. The fees are astronomical for a small shop like mine. It’s almost not worth it. I had someone reach out and ask about purchasing cards, and that’s why it’s open today. I’m honestly not looking to grow or have any huge marketing plans. I’m disabled, and card-making is a hobby.

Advice for new sellers

What’s your advice for a new seller starting an Etsy shop?

You really have to stand out these days. Be sure that your photos are of good quality and show off your product. Upload a small video showcasing your product. Use the tags. They really are helpful when someone is searching. Don’t fall into the free with a $35 purchase trap. Be sure that it makes fiscal sense. Try to grow your customer base through other social media apps and share, share, share.
